Flatiron-style tower proposed for Howe-Beach
The developer that built Vancouver's tallest building, the Shangri-La, has applied to the city of Vancouver to build a 49-storey condominium tower at the corner of Howe Street and Beach Avenue near the north end of the Granville Bridge.
The tower proposed by Westbank Projects Corp. starts as a triangle at the lower level and then becomes a square as it rises above the bridge.
"In doing so, it also increases the desirable spaces for living at its top, while freeing a new common space at its base," the building's architect, Bjarke Ingels, writes in the rezoning application. "The tower is a contemporary descendent of the Flatiron Building in New York City, one of the city's most important landmarks." New York's Flatiron Building is triangular.
Ingels is a Danish architect who has won several awards and was named Wall Street Journal's Architectural Innovator of 2011, according to his online biography.

Unfortunately we’d lost the warm light we’d had earlier in the morning and the sky behind the building had turned an unappealing off-white, but at least the fact that it was backlit from the plaza side would be muted by the clouds. The area in front of the building is now a plant and table filled plaza which was full of New Yorkers enjoying on of the first warm days of this spring. One of my personal favorites is the iconic Flatiron building…. The flatness of the sky is saved because it helps to accentuate the lines of the building and doesn’t detract from the splashes of color in the foreground. We took advantage of the nice weather this morning while visiting New York to stroll around Manhattan with my editor at B&H, Chris Gampat—who had the day off since the offices are closed for Passover....
